Lt. Gov. Dardenne hosts first of three tourism town hall meetings

Tourism Town Hall meeting A tourism town hall meeting hosted by Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne in Shreveport last month allowed regional stakeholders to share input on tourism growth and direction with state industry officials. The public forum was the first of three meetings-similar meetings are set in Lafayette (Oct. 15) and Monroe (Oct. 28).

Patrons at eight notable Birmingham restaurants were treated to Louisiana-inspired meals on Sept. 23 as part of a Louisiana Restaurant Takeover culinary tourism promotion. Acclaimed chefs from restaurants statewide participated in the endeavor put on by the Louisiana Travel Promotion Association and Birmingham-based Hoffman Media, which publishes 10 food and entertainment magazines.

  Louisiana Book Festival will honor artist George Rodrigue
The 11th Louisiana Book Festival is set for Nov. 1 in downtown Baton Rouge. The event focuses on Louisiana authors and their works and includes workshops, activities for children, Louisiana food, live music and writer presentations. This year's event will honor the late George Rodrigue, the artist known for his Blue Dog series. The speaker slate includes Rick Bragg, Cokie Roberts, Charles M. Blow, James Carville and Mary Matalin.

  San Francisco Plantation reopens
A $1.3 million facelift is complete at San Francisco Plantation in Garyville, as plantation officials prepare for a traffic surge at their Frisco Fall Arts and Crafts Festival later this month. Mansion renovations-the most significant since 1973-included leveling the foundation as well as improvements to the second floor grand gallery. The Oct. 25 - 26 festival will feature more than 100 artisans, craftsmen and chefs and will have a large children's activities area.

  National WWII Museum one of America's best, says TripAdvisor
The National World War II Museum in New Orleans has been named a top 10 Travelers' Choice for museums in the U.S. by TripAdvisor. Awards were based on an algorithm that assessed the quantity and quality of TripAdvisor travelers' reviews and opinions throughout a 12-month period. Only New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art, Los Angeles' Getty Center and The Art Institute of Chicago graded higher among U.S. museums.
 


Flyway Byway map   Flyway Byway map, guide unveiled
A guide to attractions, outdoor recreation and food and lodging providers along the Flyway Byway scenic byway as well as a map of the 55-mile route through Jefferson Davis Parish are now available. Visitors and residents can get their copies at local and state welcome centers as well as at attractions, restaurants and businesses along the byway connecting Jennings, Welsh, Lake Arthur, Roanoke and Thornwell.

USA Today named the Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville one of the 10Best for haunted spots in the U.S. Legend says the 1796 mansion is the site of as many as 11 deaths. Rattling doorknobs and locks, moved furniture and disappearing objects are among oddities allegedly experienced by tourists and overnight guests.

The Louisiana Tourism Coastal Coalition offers a free Louisiana Coastal Guide to Fun through its website, by mail and at state and local welcome centers in its 10 member parishes. The guide, a joint initiative of LTCC and the Louisiana Office of Tourism, includes information and imagery on coastal Louisiana experiences, driving distances to and between major coastal cities and interesting regional facts.

Hotel News Now - Travel spending by millennials rose 20 percent over last year and surpassed the 12 percent average year-over-year gain of all U.S. households, according to a recent MMGY Global research report. The firm's 2014 Portrait of American travelers also indicated millennials are the only generational group with rising travel intentions-Gen Xers, baby boomers and matures all posted declines.
 


Bleisure travel   Travel report reveals half of Americans blend leisure and business travel
MarketWatch - Approximately half of today's U.S. business travelers are tacking leisure time to their work trips, pointing to a growing trend of business and leisure or "bleisure" travel, according to a recent Hotwire.com travel behavior survey. While 49 percent of business travelers of all ages are budgeting leisure travel into their trips, the trend bumps to 56 percent for business travelers ages 18 to 34.
